Auto Accident with Injuries
On Sunday June 27th, crews from Ambulance 415 and Engine 401 responded
for a report of an auto accident with injuries possibly involving
multiple vehicles. Mutual aid was also received by Independence
Ambulance 463. When units arrived on the scene, crews found two vehicles
that were involved in a head on collision. Two persons were transported
from the scene for treatment at local emergency rooms.

Live Fire Training
Sunday June 6th



During the month of May crews were busy
providing annual public education classes to the children at St. Henry
School. The 7th grade classes were instructed in first aid, the 8th
grade classes earned their CPR certifications and the third grade class
completed a fire safety program and became Jr. Fire Marshalls. These
programs served approximately 125 children.



On Saturday March 27th, personnel
participated in Ventilation Training at a vacant building on Cross
Street. During this training, personnel performed vertical ventilation
using a variety of power and hand tools.

Auto Accident with Injuries
On Friday March 26th at approximately 1500 hours, crews from Ambulance
415 and Engine 401 and Chief officers 425 and 426 responded for a
report of an auto accident with injuries possibly involving multiple
vehicles. Mutual aid was also received by Erlanger Ambulance 64. When
units arrived on the scene, crews found two vehicles that were involved
in a head on collision. Two persons were transported from the scene for
treatment at local emergency rooms.

Vehicle Fire
On March 4, 2010 at 12:40 AM crews from Engine 401, Ambulance 415 and
Chief 425 responded to the field next to the park in East Covered Bridge
for a report of a vehicle fire. When crews arrived the pickup truck was
fully engulfed in flames. Due to the location of the vehicle being off
of the roadway and in rough terrain, E-401’s crew had to deploy 650 feet
of hose to the vehicle to extinguished the fire.

Chimney Fire
On Wednesday
February 10, 2010, Engine 401’s crew along with 415 and Chief 428
responded to a report of a chimney fire at a residence on Walnut Street.
On arrival the resident stated that flames were visible from the top of
the chimney. Light smoke was noted in the residence. Crews extinguished
the fire and ventilated the residence. Ambulance 415’s crew transported
one patient to the hospital

Pedestrian Struck
On Tuesday February 2, 2010 at 2300
hours, Ambulance 415 and Engine 401 were dispatched to the 3900 block of
Dixie Highway for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. On
arrival, personnel found a male patient that was struck while riding a
bicycle. Crews provided care to the patient and transported to
University Hospital in Cincinnati for treatment for injuries. Crews on
the scene were assisted by Chiefs 425 and 428 and Erlanger Medic 98.

Structure Fire
At 10:50PM on Monday January 25th
crews were dispatched for a report of a working structure fire. Under
moderate snow conditions, Chief officers 425 and 428 arrived on the
scene, an initial report was given of light smoke coming from the rear
and basement of the single family dwelling. Engine 401’s crew made entry
to the rear of the building and found fire in several locations in the
house. The fires were extinguished. Crews from Engine 402, Ambulance 415
and a mutual aid crew from Erlanger assisted with the incident.
Personnel conducted overhaul of the scene. Kenton County Air 1 and the
Kenton County Task Force were also dispatched to the scene for services.

Motor Vehicle Accident
Ambulance 415 was dispatched to
assist another agency on the morning of Thursday January 21, 2010 with a
motor vehicle accident with injuries. Ambulance 415’s crew along with
Erlanger Fire and Medic Units responded and found a single car accident
involving a utility pole and fire hydrant. One patient was treated and
transported to University Hospital in Cincinnati.

Industrial Fire
On Thursday January 14, 2010, crew responded along with mutual aid
crews from Erlanger and Florence to a report of a working fire at an
industrial facility on Industrial Road. Chief Officers 425 and 426
arrived on the scene and reported a possible working fire in a dust
collection hopper. Engine 401’s crew investigated and found the fire
was out and had not extended beyond the collection unit. Crews
released mutual aid units and returned to service.

Pedestrian Struck
On December 15, 2010, ambulance 415 responded to a report of a
pedestrian struck by a vehicle on Dixie Highway. On arrival, the
crew found a 15 year old male patient on the ground. Bystanders
stated the patient was struck by a vehicle. The patient was packaged
and transported to Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati for evaluation.

Fundraiser
Once again, the Children of Dorothy Howell Elementary have teamed up
with MAZAK Corporation to help make our community safe. The children
held a "Penny War" where the classes collect change to go towards a
project or need at the fire department. The classes compete to see who
can collect the most money. The money collected is matched by the MAZAK
Corp. This year's donation went towards purchasing a new ventilation
fan. This fan is used by fire fighters to remove smoke and other deadly
gas from residences or businesses. The fire fighters of the Elsmere Fire
District would like to thank the children and staff of Dorothy Howell
Elementary and also the MAZAK Corp for their continued support of the
fire department and public safety in Elsmere.
A special thanks goes out to Mrs. Wainscott's and Mrs. Hambrick's
classes. These classes won the penny war and were treated to lunch at
the fire station.

Auto Accident
On Nov 14th at apprx. 1:10 AM, crews were dispatched for a MVA with
injuries on Dixie Hwy at Park Ave. Chief Officers 425 and 428 responded
to the scene and reported a one vehicle accident with a car into a
utility pole. The utility pole was broke off and laying across the top
of the vehicle. Live wires were down across Dixie Hwy with power outages
in the area. Ambulance 415 and Engine 401 crews responded. One patient
was on scene who refused any medical treatment. Crews contained the area
and the utility company was called to address the live wires and downed
pole. Debris was cleaned up and crews returned to service.

OLS Training
On Nov 12th and 13th, many of the personnel of the Elsmere Fire District
attended the OLS (Officer Leadership Seminar) training. Annual event
training was sponsored by the Kenton County Fire Chief's Association,
Kenton County Emergency Management and Responder Magazine, provided two
days of exceptional lectures and learning opportunities for all levels
of the fire service. This year's keynote speakers were nationally known
veteran fire officers Dan Noonan; FDNY retired, and Jerry Tracy; FDNY.
They spoke on topics such as Hidden Dangers, Deadly Consequences and
First Alarm Strategy & Tactics. Each fire fighter surely brought away
from these seminars tools to better protect our community.
Mutual Aid
On Oct 27th
Engine 401 responded with Erlanger Fire Department in the area of
Stevenson Road and Rainbow for a vehicle on its top with extrication.
Engine 401 was first to arrive on scene finding one vehicle on its top
with the driver out of the vehicle. Driver was uninjured and refused
medical treatment. Engine 401's crew assisted Erlanger FD with debris
removal from roadway.

Mutual Aid
On Oct 27th
Engine 401 was dispatched with Erlanger Fire Department to Stevenson
Road for a possible structure fire. Upon arrival 401's crew assisted
with investigation and overhaul of an overloaded electrical outlet.

Auto Accident
On Oct 23rd, Engine 401 and
Ambulance 415 were dispatched to the area of 6800 Industrial Road for a
two vehicle MVA with injuries. Chief 425 and Assistant Chief 428 also
responded to the scene to assist units. On arrival, IC 425 reported a
two vehicle accident with one car off of the road. Four patients were
transported to emergency rooms from the scene. Ambulance 415 and
TransCare Medic 1083 transported one and mutual aid ambulances responded
to the scene to transport three patients with minor injuries.

Structure Fire
On Sept 22nd
around 0330 hours, Engine 401,402, Ambulance 415 and Erlanger
Truck 60 were dispatched to the intersection of Garvey and Shaw
for a report house fire. Chief 425 was first to arrive on scene
advising heavy fire showing from 2nd floor apartment. Asst.
Chief 428 on scene as well. Engine 401 on arrival made quick
aggressive fire attack with fast knock down. Personnel from Engine 401, 402, and Erlanger
Truck 60 preformed salvage and overhaul operations. Fire
contained to front room of the apartment.

Ventilation Training
On
Sept 23rd crews conducted ventilation training. During the
course of this training, crews demonstrated starting gas powered
equipment used for roof ventilation, demonstrated a basic
understanding of the principles for ventilation, safety
precautions to be taken when conducting ventilation procedures
and how different types of ventilation work in different cases.

Vehicle Fire
On Aug 13 Engine 401 was dispatched in the area of Wells for a
vehicle fire. Chief 425 and Asst. Chief 428 and Engine 401 responded
to the incident. Chief 425 was first on scene and found the vehicle to
be fully involved inside the passenger area. Engine 401 made fire attack
performed overhaul operations.

Vehicle Fire
On
Aug 13 Engine 401 was dispatched in the area of Terrill Dr for a
vehicle fire. Chief 425 and Asst. Chief 426 responded to the
incident. Chief 425 was first on scene and advised heavy fire inside
the passenger compartment of the vehicle. Engine 401 made fire
attack and performed overhaul operations.

Mutual Aid
On July
26th Engine 401 was dispatched into Boone County to assist Florence with
a house explosion. Upon arrival Engine 401's crew was assigned to Engine
102's crew from Florence. Both crews checked the rear of the structure
for fire and damage to surrounding buildings that were affected by the
explosion. The cause is still under investigation by Boone County Task
Force.

Auto Accident
On July
1st Elsmere Engine 401, Ambulance 415, Asst. Chief 426 and Asst.
Chief 428 responded to the intersection of Dixie Hwy and May St for a
two (2) vehicle collision with possible injuries. On arrival crews found
a two (2) vehicle collision with moderate damage to both vehicles. One
patient was transported to hospital with minor injuries for evaluation.

Kitchen Fire
On June
26th Elsmere Engine 401, Engine 402, Ambulance 415 and Truck 60 from
Erlanger were dispatched to Capital Ave for a possible structure fire.
Chief 425 was first on scene reporting smoke showing. Occupant of the
apartment attempted to extinguish the fire prior to FD arrival. Engine
401's crew made entry into the apartment and found a small fire on the
stove top. 401's crew extinguished the fire while Erlanger Truck
60 setup ventilation. Crews checked for extension with none found
outside of fire area. Red Cross was contacted for the occupants of the
apartment.

Forcible Entry Training
On June 7th crews conducted forcible entry training. During the course
of this training, crews demonstrated cutting through various types of
material with specialty blades. Some materials that were used included,
shingles, steel doors and concrete.

Oven Fire
On May 28, 2009 crews responded
to an apartment on Garvey Avenue for a possible structure fire. Chief
425 arrived on the scene and found a fire in the stove in a second floor
apartment. Engine 401’s crew extinguished the fire and conducted
overhaul. A down stairs tenant had attempted to extinguish the fire
using a residential fire extinguisher. The four-family apartment
building had no working smoke detectors. E-401, C-425, C-428 and
ambulance 415 responded to this call.

Vehicle Fire Training
During the week of May 26th, crews from each shift conducted
car fire training. After a class room portion of training, where vehicle
fires suppression and techniques were reviewed, crews conducted live
vehicle fire training at a local junk yard. By setting actual fires and
having crews practice fire suppression, vehicle entry and review the
unique situation a vehicle fire can present, crews are more prepared to
respond to actual vehicle fires.


Memorial Day Parade
The Fire District participated
in the Annual Memorial Day Parade sponsored by the VFW. As tradition
goes, the entire fleet rode in the parade and many personnel. As always,
out of respect and for the protection of hearing of our young citizens,
Elsmere Crews rode silently in the parade without sounding sirens. Crews
tossed candy to the crowd and passed out frozen ice pops to the kids.

Structure Fire
On May 21, 2009 crews responded to Eagle Drive for a reported structure
fire in a mobile home with possible entrapment. Chief 425 arrived on
scene and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof and windows in
the middle of the home with confirmed entrapment. Engine 401’s crew
quickly extinguished the fire and during the primary search located one
male victim who had succumbed to the fire. The Elsmere Police Department
and the Kenton County Fire Investigation Team are investigating to
determine the cause of the fire. E-401, E402, U421, A-415, C-425, C-428
and Kenton County Air One all responded to this incident.

Air Ambulance Training
On May 20, 2009, personnel conducted training with PHI. PHI is an air
ambulance company stationed in Grant County, KY. Their response time to
our area is less than 10 minutes. There are situations where a
helicopter transport unit is needed to transport a critical patient,
often trauma patients, to an appropriate facility. This is most often a
trauma facility. These transports are conducted with personnel trained
in advanced emergency care and often reduce the transport time of a
patient to a facility. After a classroom portion, the helicopter landed
in a nearby lot. Crews train on the procedure for preparing a patient
for transport via air ambulance, preparing a landing zone and when to
request an air ambulance.

Fire Safety Graduation
On May 15, 2009, the third grade class at St Henry Elementary completed
their Fire Safety Program, graduated and received their Junior Fire
Marshall Certificates. After the graduation the class of 32 children
enjoyed a pizza party with the fire fighters. This is the 16th
year for this program.


Public Education
Each year St Henry 7th grade students complete a First Aid
course. On Friday April 24th, students toured the ambulance
and learned about the equipment and supplies that are used by EMTs
during EMS transports.

Extrication
During the week of April 20th,
each shift conducted training in auto extrication.

Memorial Unveiling
To honor
past and present fire department members the Elsmere
Fire District unveiled and dedicated
the Elsmere Fire
District
Firefighter Memorial on October 7, 2007. This monument located at
the corner of Garvey Ave and Ash
Street will be a lasting symbol of respect and admiration for the
Men and Women who have unselfishly served the citizens of Elsmere
over the last 100 years.
